Web technologies and smart devices have spurred increased access to and reliance on digital information identifying the geographic location and characteristics of places where we live, work and do business. Social media, photographs and videos tagged with location-based metadata (“geotagged”) have caught the public’s attention and more than a few celebrities and politicians by surprise.
This presentation is intended to familiarize information and records management practitioners with basic concepts and techniques used in geospatial data management. Along with real-life examples and usage techniques, attendees will explore key spatial information governance issues including security and privacy concerns. Strategies and resources will be shared for developing and deploying spatial metadata that helps RIM practitioners and users create, index, retrieve and share the records, websites, or other information they need to perform their work– now and well into the future.
This presentation was originally developed in collaboration with ARMA International and presented as a web seminar in August 2010. The content has been updated and substantially expanded for the Wisconsin AIIM and ARMA Milwaukee chapters.
About the Speaker
Lori Ashley is an independent RIM consultant, writer, editor, and educator living in southeastern Wisconsin. Before starting her own firm, Tournesol Consulting, in 2003 she worked as a business strategist in the public sector, the regulated energy industry and in private commercial enterprises. Lori would like to leverage her understanding of RIM and geospatial technologies to help ARMA and AIIM members advance the use of location-based information and metadata in their organizations, especially for electronic records that must be retained for long (10+ years) or indefinite periods of time.
Lori is versed in international and national standards and specifications for records management and long-term digital preservation. Lori is a member of AIIM, ARMA and the Society of American Archivists. She was awarded the 2011 ARMA Madison “Chapter Leader of the Year,” currently serves as VP-Membership and previously served as spring seminar chair for four years.
